My rating of this resource: ***

My experience using this resource:
Genetics

Topic I was teaching:
Biotechnology: what it has the power to reveal (whether we want it to or not...)

My learning goal for which this resource was used:
To have the students understand what DNA has the power to "tell" us about ourselves...

Course Level:
A.P., Honors or Advanced, Intro or Regular

How I/my students used the resource:
To have students appreciate the significance of what a DNA sample can tell about themselves and appreciate the wanted/unwanted implications of having others know this information.
To have students become informed decision-makers about with whom they share their personal/biological information.

Value Added:
Increases access to scientists, Increases student engagement and motivation, informs them about a current research project, stimulates bioethical awareness

Strengths:
Captures the students' interest about the topic and stimulates great bioethical discussions (not a focus of this site's information but is how I chose to use it)!!

Weaknesses:
clearly commercial site....

There is no statement about who "owns" the information once it is sent in...
