My rating of this resource: ****
My experience using this resource: Biology
Topic I was teaching: Evolution
My learning goal for which this resource was used: This resource was used to support and buffer a lesson on natural selection.
Course Level: Intro or Regular, Remedial
How I/my students used the resource: Following a note set and discussion of industrial melanism and Kettlewell's peppered moths, students tested their understanding by utilizing the interactive resource. Using the ActivBoard, students played the role of a bird feeding and found out for themselves that it is easier to feed on moths that are less camouflaged than others. Controls within the animation allowed the environment to be manipulated while automated bar graphs illustrated the changing population dynamics.
Value Added: Provides visualization or animation, Increases modeling skills, Provides a virtual lab, Provides practice or tutorial, Increases student engagement and motivation
Strengths: The activity provides an excellent opportunity for students to model natural selection in the classroom and observe changing population dynamics. Students enjoy a fun and creative activity while they are actively engaged in learning. The animation, with its' crisp graphics and unique sounds, naturally stimulates students, encourages cooperative behavior, and enhances the classroom community.
Weaknesses: The activity is best utilized with an ActivBoard and a good sound system. It will function using a mouse or touchpad, but is less than ideal in that situation. Creative teachers may be able to overcome this hurdle by utilizing individual laptops or PCs in the classroom.
