My rating of this resource: ****

My experience using this resource:
physics

Topic I was teaching:
electricity and magnetism

My learning goal for which this resource was used:
to have students understand the operating principles behind a DC motor, including direction of force on a wire, torque on current-carrying loop, magnetic field produced by a wire loop, and the way a commutator functions in a DC motor

Course Level:
Honors or Advanced, Intro or Regular, Remedial

How I/my students used the resource:
I printed out the instructions from the web site and students used the instructions to build their own DC motor in small groups

Value Added:
Provides practice or tutorial, Provides additional content, Increases student engagement and motivation

Strengths:
instructions are clear and easy to follow, materials are inexpensive and easy to acquire, students get a kinesthetic feel for the forces involved

Weaknesses:
might be seen as too "juvenile" by advanced students?
