My rating of this resource: *****

My experience using this resource:
Chemistry

Topic I was teaching:
Organic chemistry, bonding

My learning goal for which this resource was used:
Students learn how to write and visulize Lewis dot structures, ball and stick models and space filling models of organic compounds

Course Level:
A.P., Honors or Advanced, Intro or Regular, Remedial

How I/my students used the resource:
Students used the notepad feature of the program to create Lewis dot structures and structural formulas. Then via the 3-D rendering program students transformed their structural formulas to ball and stick models and space filling models.

Value Added:
Provides visualization or animation, Increases modeling skills, Provides additional content, Provides assessment opportunity

Strengths:
ChemSketch is a valuable software program for my unit on chemistry bonding. It allows my students to create, compare and animate organic compounds. Unlike other molecular modeling software, it does not require the chime plug-in, rather you can save the models you create as a gif and/or jpeg. The program also has a tool that allows you to create animates that can be viewed in apple's quick-time player. And given that it is freeware, students can download the program to their home computer and use it.

Weaknesses:
None
