My rating of this resource: *****
My experience using this resource: physics
Topic I was teaching: mechanics and some of the optics
My learning goal for which this resource was used: to provide my students with a textbook-like experience without having them purchase a text book.
Course Level: Intro or Regular
How I/my students used the resource: As a textbook, usually as the reading part of a homework assignment.
Value Added: Provides visualization or animation, Increases graphing skills, Increases modeling skills, Provides a virtual lab, Provides practice or tutorial, Provides additional content, Increases student engagement and motivation
Strengths: quality of the content is high; it is written in a very "Paul Hewitt" kind of style and many of the pictures are in his style; my students have never complained that they had any trouble accessing the site; it is easy to find by just typing in "the physics classroom" into google and it is the first hit on the list; it also has some nice animations in the "multimedia physics studio"we don't have many reading assignments and I hate having students buy a text book for $100 +, when they can just get these notes on line for the 6-10 times a year when we want them
Weaknesses: It doesn't come with supplementary problems (problems without published answers) as a text book hasI need to be somewhat judicious using it because I want students to figure out f=ma in the lab before they read about it online. Timing therefore can be critical. |
