My rating of this resource: *****
My experience using this resource: Biology
Topic I was teaching: Biological classification-taxonomy
My learning goal for which this resource was used: To examine the process of biological classification as a tool scientists use to help them describe and understand biological diversity. To understand the suggestion of that biological classification abou the evolutionary history of the organisms.
Course Level: Honors or Advanced, Intro or Regular
How I/my students used the resource: Student visited various websites to acquire pictures of organisms within the same kingdom --> species. Then, they imported these pictures into an inspiration chart and created their own personalized taxonomy tree.
Value Added: Provides visualization or animation, Increases graphing skills, Increases mapping skills, Increases modeling skills, Provides access to data sets, Provides access to remote instrumentation, Increases data collection & analysis skills, Access to other student work or data, Provides practice or tutorial, Provides additional content, Provides assessment opportunity, Increases student engagement and motivation
Strengths: Students were exposed to some concept about taxomony that I did not take the time to get into. In addition, those students that were struggling with the concept prior to the activity develop a better understanding of taxonomy and its objectives upon completing the activity. It takes a little while to get some students going on the assignment for their web searching skills are limited. The beauty of it all is that, some students are more than happy to help their peers once they get going with the assignment.
Weaknesses: Students without laptop were bored out of their mind. Looking over someone else's shoulder is not a good way to learn.
