My rating of this resource: ****

My experience using this resource:
Physics

Topic I was teaching:
Newton's Laws

My learning goal for which this resource was used:
For the students to observe that unbalanced forces result in accelerations.

Course Level:
Honors or Advanced, Intro or Regular

How I/my students used the resource:
Since we only have one WSS, I did the demonstration. I showed how the various directions of acceleration affect the the other directions (they don't) and how an object in uniform motion is not accelrating and has no net force acting on it (NEwton's first Law).

Value Added:
Provides visualization or animation, Provides access to remote instrumentation, Provides additional content, Increases student engagement and motivation

Strengths:
I have used wired accelerometers before, but it is hard for the students to see what is goig on because the wires limit the length of the demonstration. It is also challenging for them to see how forces acting at right angles to other forces don't affect them (we only have one-axis accelerometers. Because this is wireless and has all three axies, the students "got it" much faster.

Weaknesses:
Well, it only works under Windows XP and the only machine I have with XP is my laptop, which I needed to connect up to the ACTIVboard for the students to see everything. We do not have enough site licenses for me to upgrade the computers in my room to XP, so the students will not be able to use the new sensor until my computers can be upgraded.
