My rating of this resource: ****

My experience using this resource:
AP Biology

Topic I was teaching:
Study Strategies in AP Bio

My learning goal for which this resource was used:
To enhance a student's "tool kit" for study efforts and improve study skills - both of which gives students confidence in all aspects of their learning (class discussions/laboratory activities/test preparation)

Course Level:
A.P.

How I/my students used the resource:
As a first year AP Bio teacher, I walked my students through the web-based resources associated with the Campbell/Reese 7th Edition Biology text. This took place on the first day of class with hopes students would use them to start the year off on the right foot.
I found that unless they were assigned, students were not availing themselves of these wonderful resources. So, I made them an integral part of homework.
Now, I no longer need to assign the pre-test/activity quizzes/labs as the students realize how truly valuable they are.
I also use the animations, project them on the white board, take notes around them and then take a digital photograph of the class's work. (If I had a white board, I envision this would be a good application too!)

Value Added:
Provides visualization or animation, Increases graphing skills, Increases modeling skills, Provides a virtual lab, Provides practice or tutorial, Provides assessment opportunity, Increases student engagement and motivation

Strengths:
very easy to use! most of the time very appropriate with respect to detail! the students truly value these resources now!
I also use the electronic classroom which saves significant grading time - allowing me to spend more time with class/lab prepration.

Weaknesses:
Sometimes too simplistic in detail
There is a time limit where the web site will drop a student due to inactivity. (For example, they need to plan about an hour of time to complete the chapter assessment. A student cannot start it, go have dinner, and finish the test later.)
